Excess (deductible)

Everyone aged 18 or older has a mandatory excess for basic health insurance. In addition to the mandatory excess, you can choose a voluntary excess.

The mandatory excess of EUR 385 (in 2025) for adults applies to almost all care covered by basic health insurance.

Care to which the excess does not apply:

  • Care provided by your GP and the GP out-of-hours service/emergency post.
  • Maternity care

PLEASE NOTE: The excess does apply to:

  • medication prescribed by the GP
  • tests related to care/diagnostics by your GP (laboratory tests, X-rays, ultrasound, endoscopy, etc.)

If needed, ask about the costs of additional tests. Sometimes the GP knows the costs, or otherwise the laboratory or hospital to which you are referred. Under the Rates heading in the menu bar, you will find a link to the rates of the Streeklaboratorium and the AtalMedial laboratory.

Children and young people aged 0 to 17 are exempt from the excess!
